The BC and Yukon Chapter of the A&WMA is pleased to announce the first event of 2025 to be held at the Port of Vancouver and presented by Sally Pang.
Presentation Abstract:
The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority (VFPA) is currently undertaking a 2-year air quality monitoring study in the near-port community of Strathcona, a dense residential area found next to a series of busy port terminals and associated supply chain networks (e.g., train tracks and trucking routes). This Strathcona Area Air Quality Study (SAAQS) is funded by VFPA; however, it is guided by a steering committee made up of representatives from the Strathcona Residents Association (which co-chairs with VFPA), as well as air quality experts from academia and local agencies. Air quality measurement study period started in January 2023 and lasted until Dec 2024. To capture the port-related combustion engine emissions, there are four air pollutants monitored: NO2, SO2, PM2.5 and BC. Since the study is focused on evaluating the local air quality conditions within Strathcona and the impacts from local emission sources, low-cost monitor technologies are employed to provide greater spatial coverage across the neighborhood. These low-cost monitors are spread across 18 strategically selected monitoring locations in and around Strathcona. To contextualize Strathcona’s local air quality, the study’s air quality measurements are compared to those from other monitoring stations in the Metro Vancouver region.
